Q. Can I use lemon in the Rosh Hashana food if it’s not strong tasting?
A. One can use lemon if it is mixed with other flavors and its taste is not strong.

Q. Can garlic cloves be used in a salad dressing or dip on Rosh Hashana?
A. Garlic may be eaten on Rosh Hashana.

Q. Can one eat pickles on Rosh Hashana?
A. We avoid eating on Rosh Hashana foods that were cooked in vinegar or have an overall vinegar taste. This would include most pickles as they are preserved in vinegar. The fact that it has a pleasant taste would not be a reason to permit it on Rosh Hashana; as long as overall the vinegar is detectable, it should be avoided.
Q. Are we allowed to use olives on Rosh Hashana?
A. There is no problem to eat regular olives. Olives in vinegar, however, should not be eaten.
Q. Can I use a drop of rice vinegar on Rosh Hashana in a recipe, if its taste will not be detected? It will be mixed in with other sweet foods and the food itself containing the vinegar will be sweet?
A. It is OK to add some vinegar to a dressing if its taste won’t be detectable.

Q. Are we just as Makpid to eat sour foods until Hoshana Rabbah as we were on Rosh Hashanah itself?
A. There are those who are careful not to eat sour or bitter foods until after Hoshana Rabbah or Simchas Torah. I am aware that the Rebbe had chrein on Sukkos.
Explanation: The Alter Rebbe writes in his Shulchan Aruch 583:2 only that on Rosh Hashana one avoids eating fish in vinegar. However, this custom is recorded in some Sefarim such as Luach Dvar Yom B’Yomo and Piskei Teshuvos 583:5.
