Music from a not-yet-observant Yid

Question:

Recently a song by has become popular worldwide amongst many Yidden.

The singer isn’t a Torah observant Jew yet sings about “Hakodosh Barcuh hu”.

Does halacha speak about hearing music from not yet observant Yidden who may have a good message?

If this similar to hearing a reform Jew sing about Hashem?

Is it appropriate for a G-d fearing Jew to listen to him sign this song?

Is it appropriate to hear a different observant Jew sing this song which he composed?

What should a parent do if they hear their children playing this song from this singer either themselves or in front of younger siblings?

Answer:

From a Halachic perspective, it’s not inherently forbidden to listen to a non-observant Jew sing, as long as the content aligns with Torah values.

However, some sources suggest considering the soul of the composer, not the singer or player. See similarly here.

Regarding any specific song, if the lyrics or message are in line with Torah values, it could be permissible to listen to, regardless of the singer’s observance level. However, if there are concerns about the singer’s intentions or if the lyrics touch on sensitive religious matters, caution is warranted. It’s also worth considering the source and intent of the music, as well as the influence that listening to a specific artist (and style of music) can cause on the person.

Generally speaking, if there’s doubt about any of the above, it is recommended to be stringent in this matter.

As for Chinuch, when children are listening to a song, it’s an opportunity for parents to discuss the importance of discernment in music choices and ensuring alignment with Jewish values. Parents can provide guidance on evaluating the content and intentions behind the music, as well as the effects of listening to it, helping children make informed decisions in line with a G-d fearing Jew’s lifestyle.
