If I am in a place where there is no Sukkah for a long time until I get to a place with one, can I drink or have a snack so that I am not starving or thirsty?

The Halachah is that one may eat or drink non Mezonos or Hamotzi foods, especially drinks outside the Sukkah, unless one affixed a meal on wine or other drinks on which it is normal to affix a meal on, where a Sukkah is then required.

Many Rishonim are stringent that even other foods require a Sukkah, such as meat, fish, or cheese, if one is eating more then a Kebeitzah. This is since they are eaten for satiation, in contrast to fruit and drinks. However, this isn’t the Halacha.

At the same time, in Shulchan Aruch it is mentioned that one who is stringent not to drink even water out of the Sukkah is praiseworthy. Indeed, the well known Chabad Minhag is to eat and drink only in a Sukkah, no matter what the situation or what the food or drink is.

Obviously, this Minhag applies only wherever possible and a Sukkah is readily available.

If one finds themselves in a situation where they feel it isn’t practical for them to keep this Minhag, they should ask advice from their Mashpia. It may be stated that the Minhag would be to not put oneself in such a situation, unless necessary.

It should be noted, that one may not starve themselves unnecessarily on Yom Tov or Chol Hamoed.
