Hatoras Nedorim: Before Erev Rosh Hashana or Aseres Yemei Teshuva?

 

Question:

I’m going to help a shliach for the yomim noraim, and am leaving ליל ערב ר”ה. I will almost certainly not be able to do hatoras nedorim on ערב ראש השנה.

Previously I’ve just done it during aseres yemei teshuva, but I’m wondering if it’s ok to milichatchila do it before I leave. Is there a preference between before erev Rosh Hashana and aseres yemei teshuva, or are they equal?

 

Answer:

Our Minhag is to do on Erev Rosh Hashanah. When necessary, one may do on Leil Erev Rosh Hashanah. It may be done even before. Before is preferred over later.

When one cannot do on Erev Rosh Hashanah in the presence of (at least) 3 people, it may be done via a video call. See details in halacha2go article #317.
