What’s the necessary intention to have when saying the morning and night Shema?

Before one begins Shema: One should have in mind that he is about to fulfil the mitzvah of reading the portion of Shema (and to fulfil the mitzvah of unifying Hashem and taking upon himself his mitzvos). If one didn’t do so and he finished Shema, he must repeat the first two Parshiyos till Vayomer.

While saying Shema: One should consider the Shema as a proclamation sent by a king to his subjects and read it with concentrated intent, with awe, fear, trembling, and quaking, just as citizens read the king’s proclamation, since the Shema is the proclamation that Hashem sent to His people, the Jews. One should consider it like a new proclamation that one has never heard before, i.e. every day one should consider its words as new, not like something that one has heard many times and which is no longer as precious as it was originally.

One must understand the meaning of the words that one is saying. One should do so throughout the whole Shema but b’dieved one need not repeat it again if one didn’t have kavanah except if he didn’t have kavanah during the first two sentences, in which case he needs to repeat the entire first Parashah till V’hoya im sho’moa.

Additionally, one must have in mind that one is accepting Hashem as his king – Kabolas ol malchus Shomayim. This is relevant only for the Passuk of Shema. If one finished already Shema and didn’t do so, he needs to repeat the entire first Parashah till V’hoya im sho’moa.
When reading the word Echad one should have in mind that the ‘Aleph’ refers to Hashem who is one, the ‘Ches’ which corresponds to the number 8 represents the fact that Hashem rules over the seven heavens and the earth, and the letter ‘Daled’ which corresponds to the number 4 represents the fact that Hashem rules over the four directions of the world. (When saying the letter ‘daled’ one shouldn’t prolong the actual pronouncing of the letter enough to have thought over the whole kavanah of the letter, rather say the letter normally and continue to think over the above in his mind only).

Additionally while saying the word “Echad” one should have in mind that he is willing to give up his life for Hashem. This isn’t halachically required but is mentioned in several sources. Obviously, this means following the word Echad. Indeed, this is the meaning of the words uvechal nefeshacha”, to love hutch and even if it requires sacrificing one’s life. According to consider Chassidic interpretation, this does not only mean physically giving up one’s life but also the spiritual aspect of subduing one soul to become one with Hashem.

When saying the words “Uzchartem es kol mitzvos Hashem” one should have in mind the mitzvah of remembering Shabbos.

When reading the third paragraph of ‘Vayomer‘, specifically the words “Asher hotzesichah me’eretz Mitzraim”: Besides for understanding the meaning of the words, one should also have in mind that one is now fulfilling the mitzvah of remembering ‘Yetzias Mitzraim’.
