When the Ba’al Koreh Makes a Mistake…
Question:
Someone pointed out to me a Halacha in Shulchan Aruch regarding correcting a Baal Koreh, that those correcting should make a point of “screaming” at the Baal Koreh.
What is the reason that these days we try not to do that if it’s brought down in Shulchan Aruch?
Answer:
One should in fact reproach the Baal Koreh when he makes a mistake that doesn’t require him to go back, such as a change of the trop etc. (When making a mistake that requires him to go back, he should be told to do so in any case).
This should be done in a peaceful way, not through “screaming” etc., being careful not to embarrass the Baal Koreh (or anyone else) ch”v.
