Driving to Shul After Accepting Shabbos Early
Question:
This past Shabbos, I verbally accepted Shabbos during the 18 minutes. Someone then drove past me and offered me a ride to shul. While in the car I realized that I already have accepted Shabbos.
- When I got into the car, someone else opened the door, but I closed it (when exiting I asked someone else to open and close). Was this OK bedieved?
- Bedieved, was it OK that someone drove me to shul?
Answer:
In general once somebody took upon himself Shabbos he can’t do any melachah just like on Shabbos (except for certain cases).
Some maintain that being driven in a car, while not being the driver, might not be a real melachah and therefore after the fact it is okay,
however because it is mainly accepted to be a problem on Shabbos, one should leave the car (one may ask the driver who didn’t take in Shabbos yet to stop the car, see below).
Opening or closing the car door in most cases would also be a problem and should not be done once one took in Shabbos (unless it doesn’t cause any electrical sensors or lights etc.)
In this case asking a yid who didn’t take in Shabbos yet to open up the door for you is permitted.
