Placment of the Chazan’s Shtender

 

Question:

My understanding is that minhag Ashkenaz is to place the Shtender for the Chazan on the right of the Aron HaKodesh and we see this has been done by the Rebbeim as well.

Is there any source for this (specifically in Chabad) and is it fine for a shul to instead put the Shtender in the middle of the shul for it to be easier for everyone to hear the Chazan.

There are clearly sources and this should not be changed.
