I’m staying in a Jewish owned and operated Airbnb room…
Question:
If you are staying in a Jewish owned and operated Airbnb room, but it is at least occasionally rented out to Non Jewish people at times, is there any Cheshash to use the toaster oven being as that you may not know exactly what they may have put inside of it?
Is it alright or make a difference if it’s wrapped in foil? This in a situation where I cannot ask the owner (who is Frum) and/or he is not likely to know the Metzius himself one way or another.
Answer:
The toaster oven may not be used unless the procedure mentioned below is done. We cannot assume that it is kosher, as the non-Jews are renting the home with the clear intention of using the oven.
The non-Jews who have rented it, may only be believed that they have not used it if they state so matter-of-factly and not with the intention that their comments be used for Kashrus matters.
The oven may be used under the following conditions:
- Only on a temporary basis where no other choice exists.
- The food must be wrapped with two covers.
- Clean the oven completely with soap or other caustic cleaner.
- Heat the oven on the highest temperature heat for an hour.
