Can I wear a hat fall instead of a full Shaitel?

Question:

I am a shlucha living in a very hot climate and I would like to start wearing a hat fall instead of a full Shaitel when doing things outside with my kids or going on long hikes and such.

A hat fall is a Shaitel that has no hair on the top (where a yarmulke would go) and therefore is much more comfortable to wear and is worn with a hat.

I know that Chabad generally doesn’t wear falls but I am wondering if my hair is 100 percent covered by the hat and the Shaitel if this is okay.

 

Answer:

Assuming it looks bald in the front, and thus one would never wear wear it without a hat, it’s not against halacha nor against the directives of the Rebbe in his letters and sichos.

Still there are various rumors about the Rebbe’s position on this, which we cannot authenticate. See also attached.

You certainly shouldn’t breach a standard accepted in your community, whether local community, or general Chabad community.

P.S. Regardless, the style obviously has to be one that has an appropriate aidel and modest look to it.
