Can kids play with dolls?

 

Q. Can my kids have dolls? Do we need to deface them?

A. Best to be stringent and deface by removing the tip of the nose.

 

Q. Does the same problem apply to a lion or cow figurine since they are included in the Merkavah?

We have some cow and lion figurines that are meant to look realistic and we also have some with softer features to appeal to small children. Do we need to disfigure any of those categories?

A. A human figurine made for adults is more severe than a doll, and one must deface it, as described earlier.

However, one may be lenient with animal figurines of the Merkavah, such as lion, as so testifies the Shach (R. Shabsai Kohen of Poland) that the custom is to be lenient. Nonetheless, it is proper to be stringent (to remove the tip of the nose) even by these animal figurines of the Merkavah.

 

Q. Does it matter if the lion and cow (or human) dolls are made to be kid friendly and are not tailored to be realistic?

A. It depends if the purpose is to play with it and it rolls on the floor, or to keep in a display showcase closet.

הנה, בצורות אדם, וכן בצורות שבמרכבה, המיועדים לגדולים חמור טפי כפשוט, כיון שעיקר ההיתר בבובות לפי שהוא דרך ארעי ולא דרך קבע. וכן שמבוזין. משא״כ כנשעשה בצורה מכובדת לנוי. אבל לסברת החכמ״א הנ״ל, בתשובה הקודמת, שבזמניננו אינן נעבדים, יש מקום היתר. ומ״מ סברא זו דחוי׳ איקרי לה בפוסקים.

אלא, שבנוגע לצורת ארי׳ וכדומה מקום יותר להקל מבצורת אדם – שהרבה מתירין בכלל, ראה ש״ך קמא, ל. ואף שכמה מחמירים – ראה דרכ״ת שם מז ואילך – למעשה אפשר להקל. אבל כדאי להחמיר.
