Suspended Aron Kodesh
Question:
Dear Rabbi Braun,
1. Regarding a Aron Kodesh that is attached to the wall and does not extend to the ground, I saw that the Chayei Adam prohibits but others permit. Would this be okay for a Chabad House?
I saw a letter of the Rebbe that one should not change from the minhag. Would this be in that category?
2. A second question: I noticed some Chabad houses have wooden doors on the outside, then a curtain, and then doors again. Supposedly the outer doors are creating a mechitzah between the Aron and the shul when there is a non-sacred event going on, and they still have the curtain in front of the doors.
I am curious what you think of this. Is it in fact a mechitzah? And is it in conformance with the idea that the curtain needs to be on the outside?

Answer:
1. As long as it’s a common thing to do, it would be fine. To resolve the issue of the חיי אדם, if it is being supported from another support (even if that one is also supported from the wall), or if it has support from the floor as well, there wouldn’t be an issue. It would also depend on size of the Aron Kodesh.
The Rebbe in that letter is not referring to the cases that the חיי אדם was referring to.
2. Regarding the Paroches, there is no issue of changing the Minhag (as discussed in the Rebbe’s letter), since the it is on the outside of the actual Aron Kodesh, and there is no additional one inside.
3. Regarding the outside door, if the event is allowed to be done in the shul, no covering is necessary, (though some things should be done at a distance), unless out of extra respect, or if it’s not a public or steady shul, and you cover it to show that, so the question is not really relevant.
