Is it true that a Chosson should wear all new clothes by his Chuppah?

 

Question:

I’ve heard that the minhag is for the Chosson to wear all new clothing by the Chuppah. What is the source for this? And does it include a coat and glasses?

Also, is there an Inyan to have my Tefillin checked before my Chasunah?

 

Answer:

This is a shmuah in the name of the Rebbe Rayatz, although there is strong support for this in earlier sources.

It’s unlikely that this would apply to a coat or glasses, though they certainly should look presentable.

Re checking tefillin before the Chasunah – I haven’t heard about this matter.

מעיל הוא רק מפני הצינה, ואינו כשאר בגדים לענין קריעה. וה״ה בעניננו. וכן לא נהגו להחליף מעיל לכבוד ש״ק. וכן מסר הריל״ג – בעל השמועה מעיקרא – בעניננו. וכן משקפיים שאינם בגדר מלבוש.
