Does the fact that we’ll be sleeping on different floors help?
The door leading to the basement is a side door which opens to a small hallway, from there steps go up to the main floor – which has a door that can be locked, and stairs go down to the basement that also has a door that can be locked.
Usually, the people living in the main or top floor of the house go through the main doors, and the ones living in the basement go through the side door.
Is the fact that there is this small hallway that people from both floors have access to – if they unlock their doors – make it an issue?
So, if she won’t open her door and won’t use the hallway while I’m there, only when I’m out of the house, will that be permitted?
Answer:
If I understand correctly, your step-grandmother enters the house from the front door, while you enter from the side door. At the side door there is a hallway leading to the basement apartment, as well as to the upstairs apartment.
In such a case you may live in the basement apartment if she leaves her door (between her apartment and the hallway) locked. If she needs to come into the hallway while you are there, the side door to the street should be opened. Additionally, you should give copies of the keys to the side door to some neighbors, instructing them to walk in every once in a while.
