When learning Bechavrusah, do both of us need to read the words?

Q. When learning Bechavrusah, Gemara or any other part of Torah shebal peh, is there a need for both chavrusas to read the words?

A. No, although there is definitely an advantage if done so. Practically, one should do whatever helps his understanding better.

תלמוד תורה ב, יב.

Q. Would one be allowed to make a Siyum on a mesechta which he learnt Bechavrusa and wasn’t careful to say all the words?

A. Yes. See also here on page 21:

Someone who took part in a Gemara shiur (even if he listened to a pre-recorded class) and completed an entire mesechta may conduct a siyum, even though he has not learned the mesechta inside. This is because the main point of studying the Oral Torah is comprehension, and not the wording.

Q. I have noticed that people seem to do this in particular by learning Rambam. If this is not necessary in other cases, would there be reason to be makpid about it for rambam?

A. When hearing the words from a chavrusa, no need to say the words. Otherwise, see here:

Is it important to say the words of Chitas and Sefer HaMitzvos, or just learning it (not verbally) suffices?
