Second Day of Yom Tov for Someone from Eretz Yisroel
Question:
I live in Eretz Yisroel, and will be in Crown Heights for Yom Tov.
I would like to know if I am still obligated to keep two days of Yom Tov? And if not, how should I go about davening, etc.?
Especially relevant is the question of Yizkor, which I need to say on the second days of Yom Tov.
Answer:
If you now live in Eretz Yisroel and intend to go back to Eretz Yisroel after Yom Tov, you’re considered a Ben Eretz Yisroel. This means that you keep only one day of Yom Tov. However, melacha is forbidden for you on both days of Yom Tov. You may not perform melacha, even in the privacy of your own home, where no one can see you.
This means that you do not light Yom Tov candles on the second night. [And on Pesach, you do not keep the second seder. You may join your hosts at their seder, but you will not recite any of the brachos except for those over food.]
Davening on the second day Yom Tov is chol hamoed davening. On the last day of Yom Tov, you will daven regular weekday (or shabbos) davening. If you’re male, you put on tefillin in private.
As for havdala on the second night, you should make your own havdala [even if it is motzoi shabbos].
Yizkor is recited on your last day of Yom Tov. If you wish, you may say Yizkor again on the next day together with everyone else.
The above all applies when traveling alone. When traveling with your family (your parents, or your spouse if married), you keep two days of Yom Tov.
