Changing the Retzuos from one Tefillin to another

 

Question:

I had a Sofer change retzuos that I previously bought, and he used the longer ones (that I wanted for the shel yad) for the shel rosh and the shorter ones for the shel yad and I realized this after I put them on. Can I switch them in this case?

And can I change shel yad retzuos from Rabbeinu Tam shel yad to rashi shel yad and vice versa?

 

Answer:

Assuming these are brand new, unused retzuos;

If you realized before you put on the shel rosh you may still switch them back to your original plan.

If you only realized after you put on shel rosh, you may only switch the retzuos of shel yad for shel rosh but not the other way around. (If you clearly informed the sofer beforehand about this, you may ask him to refund you retzuos shel yad).

Under normal circumstances you should not switch the retzuos of rashi with rabeinu tam or vice versa.

When you don’t have retzuos for rashi at all, you may in this case use the one of rabeinu Tam, but not vice versa.

הרי מדבריו שכל הטעם למה לא חלה עליו קדושת השני הוא כי צר בי’ בשגגה. וגם בנדו”ד הניח רצועה זו כרצועה של ראש בשגגה והוא שלא כמו שהזמינו בתחילה לפני שהחליפם הסופר.
