Error in Tevilas Keilim

 

Question:

I recently met a baal teshuva and realized that he had been toiveling keilim incorrectly: he immersed them once, but did not let go and instead dipped the keli a second time. (He held unto the the keli the first time, and the second time he re-dipped the part that he was holding in his hands the first time.) This has been going on for many years.

What should he do now?

Is there a heter to just do it the right way going forward, or does he have to toivel all his dishes again?

 

Answer:

Holding on loosely is fine.

Even if held tight, there is no need to re-toivel. Nevertheless, ideally, one should re-toivel metal keilim without a bracha, unless he knows that he held them with an average grip (not firmly).

ואף בודאי חייב טבילה וספק אם הוטבל – י״א שטבילת כלים מצוה ולא איסור. וראה כאן.

ומ״מ נכון להטביל שוב כלי מתכות, וללא ברכה.
