Does plain sugar in a package need a Hechsher? How about tea & coffee?

 

The following items do not require a Hechsher:

  • Plain sugar
  • Plain, unflavored tea
  • Unflavored coffee (both whole beans and instant)

Note: Some are particular to require a Hechsher even for basic raw ingredients (recommendation of Horav Henkin in Eidus L’yisroel p. 132), out of concern that production methods could change—although this is considered highly unlikely.
