May one put salt in water on Shabbos?
Putting salt in cold water (or other liquids) on Shabbos:
For pickling purposes – it is forbidden, even if one will immediately eat some of the foods being pickled.
To serve as a dip or dressing – it is permitted, provided that all the following conditions are met.
- One is making a small amount for only one meal;
- It is being made immediately before such a meal;
- The mixture will have a ratio of less than two-thirds of salt.
Regarding preparing saltwater for כרפס when Pesach falls out on Shabbos, it should be done before Shabbos. If one forgot to make before Shabbos, he may make a very small amount on Shabbos with the above conditions.
