Preparing on the first day of Yom Tov for the second day

Question:

I’m a shliach hosting a very large seuda at my Chabad House on the second night of Yom Tov, and I want to be organized so the meal doesn’t start at 9 pm.

Are there any preparations I (or a non-Jew) can do on the first day?

Answer:

In general, one may not do anything on the first day of Yom Tov to prepare for the second day. According to the Alter Rebbe, one may not even ask a non-Jew to prepare.

Regarding setting up the tables, you can invite people to eat something on Shabbos (day 1) before sunset. The room and tables may then be arranged, including cutlery that can be used for eating before sunset.

The food may only be heated, etc., immediately after nightfall.

There is room to be lenient through a non-Jew during bein hashmashos, a few minutes after sunset, for the sake of a genuine mitzvah when it cannot be done in another way, even when it is not needed for the day itself and only for the next day. This does not apply heating up food and the like, which is not considered a genuine mitzvah.

(וראה פמ״ג תנה בא״א ד מחמת שהוא לצורך מצוה. וכ״ה בשו״ע אדה״ז שם במוסגר. אבל בח״י שם ה מחמת שבות דשבות ביה״ש). ואף שהוא במוסגר – וראה מ״מ וציונים שם – באמירה לנכרי יש להקל. וא”ש, שמשו״ה לא הותר לו לשאוב בעצמו, משום שבות ביה״ש.
