Can I hint to a Goy to add light on Shabbos?
Question:
If needed, could one hint a goy to add light in our dining room when it’s not completely dark (either due to candles, outdoor light, or not all lights having gone out…)?
Answer:
Yes, if needed one may hint to a Goy to turn on a light on Shabbos provided that:
- There already is some light in the room and he is only adding in light.
- You say to him something from which he understands that you want him to turn on the light, however, it is forbidden to tell him to do anything, even if you aren’t directly telling him to turn on the light. For example, you may say to him “it’s dark in here”, however you may not say “please help me see my plate” or the like.
- You only benefit from the additional light while the original lights/candles are still on/burning. Unless in a case of great need where one’s Oneg Shabbos is dependent on the light, then you may continue to benefit from the additional light even after the other lights have gone out.
