How can I prevent Yichud if I’m on a Zoom alone with a man?
There is no issue of Yichud when speaking to a man alone on Zoom.
Nevertheless, the regular standards of Tznius, propriety, and appropriate boundaries between men and women apply. The conversation should have a legitimate purpose and should be conducted in a professional manner, just as one would conduct an in-person interaction.
Since a video call involves a direct visual connection, you should exercise care with the setting and nature of the interaction. The fact that the meeting takes place remotely should not be viewed as a reason to be less cautious.
Some practical guidelines:
- Keep the purpose of the meeting strictly professional or necessary.
- Ideally have another person present or make the meeting a group call when practical.
- Keep the camera framed to the face/upper torso, with appropriate clothing and a neutral background.
- Avoid unnecessary conversation, joking, personal discussion, or emotional intimacy.
- Keep the meeting to the minimum time necessary.
- Avoid having the meeting in a bedroom or other private/intimate setting.
- If there is a legitimate reason to have repeated one-on-one meetings, consider whether audio-only or another arrangement would accomplish the purpose.
- Do not use the private nature of Zoom as a reason to relax standards that would apply in person
