Should the Host Wash for Hamotzie First or Last?

 

Question:

I am frequently a guest where the host always washes first. Last week somebody told me that it is against Halacha to wait for everybody else and go last. Is this true?

 

Answer:

There are different customs regarding this matter, and both are acceptable.

Practically, one should follow the custom that minimizes hefsek for both the host and the guests. In places where everyone makes their own bracha on the challah, there is less advantage in washing last, although it still is beneficial if it will minimize hefsek.
