What are the guidelines for using Maaser to buy Seforim? May this be done?

Maaser money may be used to buy Seforim for oneself only if (1) one has no other money available, (2) the Seforim would not otherwise be bought, and (3) they are made available to others to use on a regular basis. One must inscribe in the Sefer that it was bought from Maaser money, so it is known who the real owner is.

Since the third condition is rarely met nowadays (Seforim are readily available and people don’t tend to borrow them), this should not be done in practice, unless one is running a lending library with set hours for the public.
