Growing up, my family would never gift knives, since knives can shorten lives etc. Is this something we should be careful about?

 

I was trying to look up a source and came across this. In the name of the Ba’al Shem Tov, “don’t present a knife as a gift” (Sichot Haran no. 9. First printed in 1798-99. Maaglei Tzedek pg. 3a. This tradition is also found in Baal Shem Tov al Hatorah, Parshas Re’ah in the Mekor Mayim Chaim, no. 6.).

 

Answer:

Although this tradition exists in some circles, in many places they were not particular about this. There are authentic reliable sources that indicate that great tzadikim would distribute knives as a gift. Thus, if this is your family custom you should probably continue following this custom; otherwise this custom need not be adhered to.

ויש שכתבו לחלק שרק לצורך מצוה מותר, או בדרך סגולה, או כשמחלק למשמשיו, או שהותר רק לאנשים בעלי צורה. וכיו״ב באופנים שונים – ראה מריח ניחוח 263. ויותר נראה שהקפידא מצאה לה מקום לחול רק בסכין ישן, ראה שמירת הנפש שם קנא. ובעיקר, דמאן דלא קפיד לא קפדינן.
