Rinsing Hot Pots in a Treif Sink

Question:

We have a sink we consider treif.

Can I wash a very hot pot directly under the sink spout?

This seems to be an issue because steam from the pot may go onto the spout, which is not kosher, and then back onto the pot, making the pot not kosher.

Answer:

There is hardly a concern with doing that. Even assuming that the spout has actually become non-kosher within 24 hours, and that the steam rising and touching the spout is still hot to the touch when touching the spout, the steam would cool off completely on contact with the spout and thus cannot cause the pot to become treif, even assuming that the steam descends back onto the pot. The steam also would be considered coming from a keli sheni.

There are many other considerations for leniency; see references below.

More importantly, if the spout is indeed treif, then one shouldn’t wash dishes with hot water coming from a treif spout altogether. This is a much bigger issue. One may use the hot water because the spout isn’t considered treif. If the water isn’t yad soledes bo, allowing one to use the water, then there would hardly be a concern with the steam.

Most of these arguments apply equally to pouring hot water from a kosher pot into a treif sink. However, there might be room for one who wishes to be stringent in this case, since the flow from the pot connects the sink with the pot. Even so, bedieved the pot is kosher.
