Which Feather Should I Use for Writing STaM?
Full question:
There is a rumor that the Rebbe said to use a goose feather to write STAM. I heard different versions of this story. Most feathers are turkey, and the goose ones that some people use are weak.
Is there a reason to use turkey feathers or can I use ceramic?
Is there advantage in turkey feathers or not, because in all versions of the rumor, it was goose. Is turkey the same, or once it’s not goose I can do anything?
It’s easier and usually would be nicer with ceramic. How much of an advantage is a feather? Is there a difference between regular ceramic and soft ceramic?
Answer:
You may use turkey feathers.
A feather has the advantage that it is flexible and would not scratch the parchment.
If you find ceramic easier, you may use it. It should be soft and you should be careful not to press hard. Also when the ink finishes, you should be careful to stop immediately, add ink, and only then continue writing.

ויתר על כן בבני יונה סוסי׳ רעא, מחמת יופי הכתב לכתוב בברזל, שעדיף טפי לעשות כתב מיופה ושוה מחששות כאלה שלא מצאנו בש״ס. וראה קסה״ס ג, ו.
והרי גם חדו״ת נכון שלא לכתוב בברזל (ראה גם ערוה״ש שם). ולא ראינו נזהרים בכך.
ולהדעות בחשש דברזל שלא יניף המקצר, ליתא בשל חרס. ולמ״ד להדר דלא יהא מק״ט – כשאין ב״ק אינו מק״ט.
וכשאינו מכביד ונזהר שלא לכתוב כשנפסק הדיו – ליכא לחששא דחקיקה ושלא אתי כתב עליון ומבטל לבטל כתב תחתון, ראה בארוכה במלאכת שמים שם.
