Is there any specific Inyan of using the Shir Lamaalos cards sold in the stores or is the Ikar the words and the surrounding art can be made custom?

 

I am not aware of any concept/directive of using specifically the standard Shir Lamaalos card (painted by Raphael Abecassis in 5747).

It appears that the main thing indeed is to have the same text, which includes the Perek 121 of Tehillim and additional names and Pesukim. There are many antique Shir Lamaalos papers containing just the text.

While the drawings might contain specific symbolisms (such as: the Luchos and rays on the top; the Menorahs and Shofars on both sides; the doves facing upwards; fish; pitchers of oil; harp; pomegranates; as well as the grass and dots all around), the drawings aren’t a key component. Still, rumor has it that when the card with this painting was shown to the Rebbe the Rebbe was satisfied with it – see Hebrew footnotes below.

ובפשטות, העיקר הוא הפרק תהלים עם הפסוקים והשמות וכו’ כנ”ל, אבל חשוב שיהא דבר נאה עם ציורים וכו’ כמו כל דבר שבקדושה. ובפרט ציורים של דברי קדושה ומצוות (כמו המנורה והשופר), ע”פ האמור בהשיחה הנ”ל – “שמיד בצאתו לאויר העולם יהי’ מוקף בענייני קדושה…”, ופשוט.
