Kosher bread with no Hechsher?
Question:
I’m living in a city with no kosher bread. The closest kosher bread is 3 hours away by car, and not easily accessible. There is a baker here who say he used only water and flour for his authentic french banquets. Is there any leniency in this situation? Also considering having bread for Shabbos – Lechem Mishneh.
Answer:
Pas palter is permissible according to halacha. Certainly in this case where Pas Yisroel is not available. The concern however is that nowadays many other ingredients are added and it is hard to just rely on his statement. If you would go and check the ingredients on a regular basis like a mashgiach does I see no problem. In fact, if you are allowed access you should be able to light the fire too so that it would be considered Pas Yisroel.
Additionally, it should be noted that the Alter Rebbe mentions that one should be cautious not to use pas palter on Shabbos and Yom Tov. Regardless, The custom is to make our own challah for Shabbos and Yom Tov in order to show honor to them.
