There is a Giyores in my community whose daughter isn’t well. Her daughter is also Giyores, but they weren’t Nisgayer together. Her daughter was Nisgayer when she was 18. Should this girl be called Bas Sarah, or use her mother’s name?

Also, for someone in the process of conversion (and someone not Jewish) how would we say the name in Tehilim? Would we use the mother’s name?

Also, a Giyores asked me if her birthday should be celebrated the day she was born, or the day that she had her conversion? And which Kapitel should she say?

Answer:

  • Mother’s name for mother/daughter who converted:

The daughter should use the name bas Sarah.

  • Davening for a gentile:

When davening for a gentile, one uses his father’s name. [There are many known stories where the Rebbe would ask for the father’s name when Davening on behalf of a non-Jew.]

  • Birthday of Ger:

From a Halacha perspective, the birthday has practical ramifications only with regards to Bar/Bas Mitzvah. Regarding this milestone (e.g. if the Ger converted as a minor Al Daas Beis Din), one celebrates the biological birthday, as this is connected with one’s physical maturity, which depends, of course, on one’s biological age. Even though the rule is that a “Ger who converts is similar to a child who is born”, this rule has its parameters in Halacha, given that some matters depend on one’s biological state. [For example, see Igros Moshe Even Hoezer 4:64 who rules that a parent and child who converted have no concerns of Yichud, for that depends on the biological reality.]

All other birthdays are important insofar as the Rebbe instructed many directives to be observed on the day of a birthday. The question is whether these directives are connected to a biological birthday or “Halacha / Neshomo birthday”.

It is recorded (Hiskashrus 211) in the name of Rabbi Leibel Groner that, as far as he remembers, the Rebbe’s directive was to establish the day of conversion as the birthday, given that this is the day when one’s Neshomo enters fully. This rumor has now been confirmed from a letter published in Igros Kodesh vol. XXX: 18.

Thus, the age for the kapital tehillim is also calculated from the year of the conversion and not from the year of birth.
