Should one pour the wine over the Havdala candle to extinguish it, or should he first pour the wine into the plate and then dip the candle in the wine to extinguish it?

 

From the לשון of the Alter Rebbe it appears that the wine should be poured on the table or on the plate and then one should put out the candle in the wine. However, pouring on the candle is also acceptable and fits in with the reason of this custom.

עיין אדה”ז סימן רצ”ו ס”ה. ולשון אדה”ז שם “גם נוהגים לשפוך על השולחן מן היין . . ומכבין בו הנר”, משמע שאחרי השפיכה מכבין הנר לתוך היין שעל השולחן. אבל לפי טעם מנהג זה “כדי שיהיה נראה לכל שלא הודלק נר זה אלא למצוה לנר הבדלה”, הרי גם אם שופך עליו מועיל. ואולי לכן ישנם העושים באופן השני.
