Question:

Can I eat blackberries/raspberries?

If yes, how can I check and clean them for bugs?

How about if they are frozen and blended in a smoothie?

 

Answer:

Both blackberries and raspberries are similar to strawberries, in regards to all of them being heavily infested and should therefore not be used. The method of cleaning is highly complex and not recommended. See file attached.

(The difference is that by strawberries there’s the option of removing the entire stem area and peel, then checking and rinsing them. When it comes to blackberries and raspberries, however, this method is not practical).

Also, it should be noted that the Rebbe Rashab testified that in his home and in his father’s home, the Rebbe Mahrash, raspberries were not eaten.

If such produce was purchased for the purpose of following a recipe that calls for blending or grinding the ingredients it’s permitted to blend them as long as you wash it and soak it first and do a general inspection. See here:

Does one need to check vegetables like spinach, fruits etc. if they will be pureed/juiced in a blender?
