Should a pregnant woman not go to a zoo?

 

Some are particular not to go to a zoo during pregnancy. There are sources for this custom. If you wish, you may go to the zoo, but do not gaze at the non-Kosher animals.

[Your intention should be to avoid looking at the non-Kosher animals, but unavoidable incidental glances do not pose a problem.]

 

Explanation:

Regarding viewing non-Kosher animals in general, the Rebbe discussed this in a Sicha on 20 Cheshvan 5744. In the footnotes of the edited talk in Likutei Sichos, the Rebbe clearly makes an exception for going to the zoo, as it is the perfect opportunity for one to reflect on the wonders of Hashem –מה רבו מעשיך ה׳.

With regards to a pregnant woman gazing at non-Kosher animals, there are a number of sources to suggest that this is stricter. However, if  your attendance is primarily for another purpose, it is sufficient to avoid purposeful gazing at the non-Kosher animals.

בהתוועדויות תש”נ ח”ג 180: ידוע מנהג נשי ישראל שבזמן העיבור נזהרים ביותר שלא להביט על דברים שאינם טהורים אלא על דברים טהורים וקדושים. אבל, השאלה אם בהמדובר שם – שאינו ברור – ה״ז גם באופן שנזכר בשיחה לחיוב.
