Can I get instrument lessons from a male teacher?

 

Is it different for different instruments? Piano? Drums?

What if there are no female teachers in the field around? Does it make a difference if it is individual lessons as versus a male teacher teaching a whole class of girls?

 

Answer:

It is obviously better for a female to get lessons from a female teacher. However, if this is not an option and there are no issues of yichud (there are other students – or people walking in an and out) and proper boundaries are in place – it is permitted.

It is also important to make sure that there is no touching as in holding the guitar together etc. (For a male to get lessons from a female teacher is a totally different matter.)

It is also suggested that you speak this over with your mashpia who knows you and can advise if this is ok for you hashkafically.
