Does a Challah board need Toiveling?

 

The Challah board is glass on wood and silver plated.

 

Answer:

It should be Toiveld, but WITHOUT a Bracha.

 

Reasoning:

• A Challah board is considered a kli Seudah –  a vessel used by a meal, thus it requires Tevilah.
• Wooden vessels are exempt from Tevilah.
• Glass and silver (plated) require Tevilah.
• A wooden vessel covered with a materiel which requires Tevilah should be Toiveled without a Bracha.
• In the case of a Challah board, it isn’t clear whether indeed no Bracha should be recited, being that the glass might actually be considered the “main” part of the vessel.
• Very possibly its produced by a Jewish company (and never owned by a non-Jew), which would make completely exempt from Tevilah.

Due to all of the above – It should be Toiveld without a Bracha.

אמנם, אם החלק העיקרי של הכלי שעליו נמצא האוכל עשוי מזכוכית אז יש לטבול בברכה כי הוא עיקר הכלי. וראה עד״ז ש״ך שם יג. אבל למעשה במגש לחלה יש להסתפק אם הזכוכית עיקר הכלי או נעשה לנוי ולהגן על הקרש. גם מקום לספק אם נעשה ע”י אומן ישראל או שנעשה ע”י גוי פועליו של ישראל, או שהחומר גלם היה שייך ליהודי לפני יצירת האומן וכו’, וכיון שכמה ספיקות בזה [- עיין שם ס”י יא ונו”כ שם], לכן למעשה יש להטביל בלא ברכה.
